Job description

Code Switch, the nation’s signature podcast and reporting team on race and identity, seeks a creative, passionate, detail-driven supervising editor who will shape those stories and bring those voices to our rapidly growing podcast and radio audience. We’re re-imagining our future — exploring how we can go to new places and tell new stories while preserving the distinctive voice that has made Code Switch a “must-listen” for so many people. And we’re committed to staying grounded in the highest levels of journalism.

The Supervising Editor will serve as a key leader on the team, helping set the editorial agenda and format of the show in collaboration with Executive Producer and other stakeholders. They will empower, motivate, and encourage the production staff to create a best in class podcast and to achieve their editorial and professional goals, creatively removing obstacles along the way.

As a Supervising Editor, you must have strong editorial judgment and will define areas of coverage, sharpen ideas, push past surface takes, seek opportunities to expand the show’s audio footprint, and be equally focused on the big picture and the minutiae. This person will manage a collaborative and tight knit team - offering constructive, rigorous, fair feedback with empathy and kindness while helping them grow.

This is a remote position that reports to our Executive Producer.

Application deadline: Sunday, March 17th by 11:59pm ET.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Set the editorial agenda in collaboration with the Senior Editor and Senior Producer, with guidance from the Executive Producer and input from hosts and producers, then motivate and empower staff to achieve goals.

  • Edit the weekly Code Switch newsletter and Instagram copy to promote episodes.
  • Edit and copy edit digital copy.
  • Lead by example by executing and helping the team execute episode production according to established workflow.

  • Bring seriousness of purpose, rigor and decisiveness, balanced with a sense of humor and a spirit of flexibility.
  • Provide direct, critical feedback to staff on pitches and performance with kindness and consideration.
  • Ensure every episode meets our high standards for craft, journalism, and tone and substance.
